Ok so updating your phone is fine. Just use itunes and it works perfectly. The problem some people are dealing with is redsnow is cutting out during jailbreak. To avoid this problem, install the update but do not restore settings. Leave the phone virgin without reinstalling all your numbers and other crap. This allows redsn0w to work and jailbreak and put in icy.
